Golden Globe Race 2018

Cloud Construct are honoured to be managing the event media and news website for the world famous, prestigious Golden Globe Race 2018. Overseeing a complex hosting setup utilising AWS technology to ensure 100% uptime and scalability for this high traffic website.

What is the Golden Globe Race?

To celebrate Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s historic 1968/9 world first solo non-stop circumnavigation in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Yacht Race, a new Golden Globe Race will be staged to mark the 50th Anniversary of that epic, starting from Falmouth on June 14th, 2018.

Like the original Sunday Times event, the 2018 Golden Globe Race is very simple. Depart Les Sables-d’Olonne, France on July 1st, 2018 and sail solo, non-stop around the world, via the five Great Capes and return to Les Sables-d’Olonne. Entrants are limited to sailing similar yachts and equipment to what was available to Sir Robin in that first race.

The Golden Globe Race is utilising our expertise in advanced hosting solutions for high traffic websites to oversee the running and maintenance of their advanced hosting setup for their website; https://goldengloberace.com

The Amazon Web Services solution utilises:

  • OpsWorks for web application launching direct from GitHub code repository with staging and live workflows.
  • Automated launch and configuration of EC2 instances via Chef scripts
  • Route53 DNS and TLS security certificate issuance
  • Elastic Block Storage for static files with snapshot backups
  • Load Balancer to control traffic to EC2 instances
  • RDS MariaDB database storage with automated snapshots
  • Nginx web server with micro caching configuration

The Golden Globe Race generates a huge amount of interest from boating enthusiasts and press who are eager to learn about the progress of the race. Impressed by the technical solutions architected for Boatshed.com‘s global presence, GGR organisers came to us for advice on their own hosting.

Having recommended and implemented several improvements to further ensure maximum speed and uptime, we are now working with GGR on ensuring their website continues to be accessible from around the world and ready to cope with the inevitable spikes in traffic as the event makes world news.

You’re a total legend – site is running great, haven’t had any issues so far, and none of the content editors have spotted any issues – THANK YOU, really appreciate it!!
